Understanding and Recognizing Dementia

Posted on 14th Sep 2020

For a very long time, we've recognised what dementia does to a person. We often associate it with memory loss - but what exactly is dementia?
Dementia is a syndrome associated with an ongoing decline of brain functioning. There are many different causes and many different types. Disorders grouped under the general term “dementia” are caused by abnormal brain changes. These changes trigger a decline in thinking skills, also known as cognitive abilities, severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behavior, feelings and relationships.
What does this mean and what are the symptoms?
Understanding dementia can be very complex and often enough, we only know the symptoms. Signs of dementia vary greatly but some can include diffulties in: problems with short term memory loss, keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments, leaving neighbourhoods and more.
What can we do about dementia and how can we help our loved ones who suffer?
Dealing with dementia can be difficult, but there are many things that help negate the symptoms. Music and song, programmes, foods and more are all such wonderful ways of reliving memories that can spark a new section of memory.
